Hope + Vine is hosting it's second annual event that raises financial support for women who have aged out of foster care by helping a widow in our community.
At its root, the spirit of Hope + Vine is community-building. We are not meant to do life alone. We were created for relationships. This is why James 1:27 calls us to care for orphans and widows. It even says, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this.”
Hope + Vine lives out this scripture through our mission to stand in the gap for former foster youth. To offer support and a safety net to young women who may not have a reliable circle to depend on.
Now, we are excited to go a step further by serving a local widow as well!
Helping a Widow
Our second annual Widow Project kicks off next week, and we are honored to introduce this year’s recipient of this day of service. Alona M. of Louisburg was married to her husband, Robert, for 34 years before losing him following a short bout with cancer. After this unexpected turn of events, she had to return to the job she had retired from just months before his diagnosis.
Alona has had a difficult time maintaining the outdoor space of the home they shared, which is where our team of volunteers is needed. We are eager to offer our help to improve the safety of several areas around her yard.
Raising Support
Our project volunteers raise funds in a manner similar to a Walk-a-Thon, where their service is sponsored by their personal connections. The funds are raised in support of the important mission of Hope + Vine.
All proceeds from this project will go to support a woman in the Hope + Vine program who has aged out of foster care. Programming costs between $12,000 and $20,000 a year for each Hope + Vine participant. This includes mental health services, financial coaching, transportation, plus additional programming.
Last year’s event was a huge success! Amy was a young widow with two small children who needed several repairs and projects completed around her home and yard. A wonderful group of volunteers came together to surround her family with a tangible display of love. And $15,000 was raised to provide valuable resources.
Get Involved
If you are searching for a way to make an impact by investing your time and resources in a worthy cause, we invite you to join us for this year’s Widow Project. This is an opportunity to say “yes” to being a part of what God is doing in the lives of the young women of Hope + Vine, and to be His hands and feet for Alona.
The kick-off party is Sunday, June 9th, from 2-4PM at the Hope + Vine shop. This is a drop-in style event to provide information, answer questions, and introduce the volunteers to each other and to this year’s honored widow. If you are interested in joining us, please email Jessica@hopeandvine.org.
We are grateful for the many hands that will come together to make light work of this project and to remind Alona that she is not alone.
